BROADSTAIRS FOLK WEEK 2010

This is Folk Week's 45th year displaying various events in a week.

The festival is a happy, community event and aimed that everyone who

comes to the festival- have a great time and enjoying the events in a terrific

athmosphere.

There will be music, concerts and dances. Concerts in the Concert Marquee in the Pierremont Part.

Folk/Country/Social Dancing Workshops at Upton School which include: Contra - a longways dances in the American style. Playford- 17th and 18th century English country dances, or modern dances in the old styles. Square- Four couples arranged in a square. Traditional dances - collected from English Villages with various formation and steps. Scottish Dances - traditional and modern, plus tea dances, evening dances and a play ball and some caller work shops of all standards.

Have the opportunity to learn to play instrument, or improve your techniques and repertoire. The tutors are competent and approachable which gladly accept participators of all ages. Workshops are open to everyone. Music worshop include: accordion, banjo, cajon, concertina, didgeridoo, fiddle, fiddle and singing, fretted instruments, harmonica, hurdy gurdy, melodeon, pocket instruments, rhythm, whistles and flutes, and guitars.

Let us use our voices, voice workshops include: African song, Beginning singing, Fiddle and singing, Pop song of the 20th century, Songs with humour, Toddlers' singalong, Unchained harmnony, and Vocal techniques for folk styles.

Welcome dance on Friday 6th August at Upton School from 19.30-2230. Opening concert- A little bit country music at the Concert Marquee at 20.00-22.30

It seems so many Americans on the list, yet TIME is an American magazine. Nevertheless, it's very interesting to read about so many amazing individuals.

Broadstairs Folk Week

Broadstairs Folk week is annually followed around the world via the internet with this year's festival's theme celebrating the American influence in the development of folk blues and root music. The Voice of America is covering many of the US plays that took place
here.

A blog on the Voice of America website features the events by a specialist reporter who has been to Broadstairs during the festival. The town is bustling and the atmosphere is vibrant with thousands of people from the UK and abroad taking part in gigs, workshops and events.

One of the final events was a band of 100 ukelele players playing the same song whilst marching from Bleak House to the Bandstand at Victoria Gardens at 2.15 on the final Friday afternoon. This display from The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is the final major concert on the final Friday.

Broadstairs in summer

The photos above were shot this midsummer, it's quite vibrant and lively. The atmosphere is magnificent. I can agree that Broadstairs is beyond compare in the summer. The pleasurable seven beach bays, delicious ice cream shops, and a countless fantastic restaurants, unique shop, Broadstairs provides for everyone.

There's no place to be... for the residents, a day trip, tourists and holidaymakers. The reason I myself do not want to be out of town in the summer. It has been acknowledge nationwide that it is the charm in Kent's coastal pride. It has been voted the second best seaside resort in the UK by a collection of people together with Rick Stein and Bill Bryson, following St. Ives in the south west.

A wind power television advert has been previously shot exclusively on locale and brought Broadstairs on the nation spotlight. The production company selected Broadstairs for the expensive advert because it had a vast selection of scenic attraction, and possessed the essence of old-styled English resort.

August is the busiest month for the town; folk week is the main attraction. This is great fun with children definitely. Gala Day is ever mainly a treat, this also includes sand castles competitions, and Neptune rising out of the water, teddy bears' picnics, music entertainments, craft and trade stalls, there is something for all folks. On Wednesday evening the firework display takes place, this is happening throughout the month, the firework displays are splendid.

Big Ben marks 150th anniversary

Big Ben is the international icon of London,
the 316 foot clock tower was completed in 1858.
Big Ben itself is the name of the 14 ton bell that chimes.

Why Big Ben?
The first is that is was named after Sir Benjamin Hall,
the first commissioner of works, a large man who was
known affectionately in the house as "Big Ben". The
second theory is that it was named after a heavyweight
boxing champion at that time, Benjamin Caunt. Also
known as "Big Ben".

The Houses of Parliament and the clock tower are one
of London's iconic landmarks. The building is known as
the Palace of Westminster and the clock tower is
sometimes called St Stephen's Tower, although it is
commonly referred to as Big Ben.

A special light above the clock faces is also illuminated,
letting the public know when parliament is in session.

Big Ben's timekeeping is strictly regulated by a stack
of coins placed on the huge pendulum. Big Ben has
rarely stopped. Even after a bomb destroyed the
Commons chamber during the Second World War,
the clock tower survived and Big Ben continued to
strike the hours.

The chimes of Big Ben were first broadcast by the
BBC on 31 December 1923, a tradition that continues
to this day.
